PETS AT HOME HITS SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE SPOT

Pets at Home has won the Sunday Times top 25 ‘Best Big Companies To Work For’ 2013.

Based on an anonymous employee survey, no other company taking part scored higher for questions about managers and colleagues, how people felt about the company, the opportunities for personal growth and the way the business approached ‘giving something back’.

Pets at Home, with its head office in Handforth, Cheshire, ranked first for fun with colleagues, with a score of 85%, and first for making a difference to the world (78%), having rehomed 57,000 animals last year and raised £1.65million for rehoming and animal charities.

The company, which employs 5,930 people, received 48 top-two scores in the 70-point questionnaire, more than double its total from last year and three times that of its closest rival, last year’s winners, Iceland.

Employees said they were excited about where the organisation is going (78%), having grown its estate over the past 21 years to 339 stores across the UK, with 83% believing they can make a valuable contribution to its continued success.

At Pets at Home, 92% of employees own pets of their own so come to the business with an underlying level of pet care knowledge. However, pet welfare is so important to the business that all store team members, irrespective of their background or previous animal related qualifications have to complete its training
programme, to ensure they are offering consistent advice and the latest thinking to customers.

Everyone that works at Pets at Home has access to a wide variety of specialist training courses including pet nutrition, microchipping, grooming and the legally recognised Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) qualification, enabling them to dispense licensed flea and worm treatments.

Internal promotion is encouraged with 90% or more of assistant store managers and area managers rising through the ranks.

People Director Ryan Cheyne said:

“Having come so close last year, when we hit the number two spot, it’s a real honour to win this year and a testament to the hard work and commitment of everyone in the Pets at Home team.

“People development is at the heart of our success. We have a step-by-step approach to training through our Pets at Home Academy, which builds knowledge and allows our colleagues to develop specialist skills in areas such as aquatics, reptiles, grooming and pet nutrition.

“As well as being highly trained to care for animals, 92% of our colleagues are experienced pet owners themselves so we are uniquely placed to meet the needs of pet owners and their pets. It is this combination of experience and expertise that makes our business so unique.

“We believe that having a team which is so passionate about what they do and investing in their evelopment, is the key to providing great customer service.”
