Greyhound Gap, a small independent charity set up to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome greyhounds and lurchers who may otherwise have been put to sleep, has received a much-needed prize package from Pets at Home.
To celebrate the millionth member to its VIP (Very Important Pets) Club, the customer loyalty scheme it launched last year, Pets at Home asked people to nominate via its Facebook page a deserving charity to win 1 million VIP ‘Lifelines’, which can be redeemed against a wide range of essential supplies.
Gavin Hawthorn, head of customer relationship management at Pets at Home, said: “We had an overwhelming response for suggestions of charities to receive our support, so it was incredibly difficult to make a decision.
“However, Greyhound Gap received an impressive number of nominations and the reasons people gave were incredibly moving. We hope our support goes a long way in helping the charity rescue, rehabilitate and rehome more greyhounds and lurchers all around the UK.”
Funded almost entirely by donations, Greyhound Gap rehomes around 150 dogs every year and keeps up to 100 dogs in its care at any one time. The charity is run with the help of a network of volunteers across the UK who help by fostering hounds, fundraising, conducting home visits, as well as transporting and walking the dogs.
Lisa Cartwright, founder of Greyhound Gap, said: “We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the 1 million lifelines, it will go a long way to making sure our kennel hounds are healthy and happy while waiting for their new homes. We really value the support that Pets at Home gives us and other animal welfare charities, a terrific organisation and much appreciated. Thank you.”
While the 1 million lifelines given to Greyhound Gap were a celebratory gesture by Pets at Home, charities benefit every single day from its VIP Club. Every time a VIP Club member swipes their VIP card when making a purchase in a Pets at Home store, they collect points, called VIP Lifelines, which can be converted into essential supplies for a local or national animal charity of their choice. The scheme has achieved more than 1 million members in just nine months, with more than £415,000 donated to a number of charities around the UK.
By joining the VIP Club, customers receive a string of benefits for their own pets as well as helping their chosen charity. This includes a 10% discount welcome voucher as well as a list of exclusive, personalised offers on food, toys, accessories, Groom Room services and Companion Care vets. In addition, they receive quarterly newsletters with useful information and advice specific to the pet they own.
