British pets are set to be spoilt this Christmas as 92% of owners plan to buy them festive gifts this year.
Four in ten owners (41%) also intend to buy presents for their friends and family ‘from’ their pet, a survey by Pets at Home has revealed. A tenth of owners will even treat themselves to a special gift from their pet.
Some 37% said they plan to send a Christmas card from their pet, while 21% intend to send their pet their own card.
However the majority of owners – 73% - said they simply add their pets’ names to the cards they send out, in the same way they would their partner, or their children.
Just like us, pets are treated to special festive luxuries in the lead-up to the big day, with 43% enjoying an Advent Calendar throughout December and 35% wearing a Christmas-themed outfit.
When it comes to Christmas Day itself, 43% of owners claim their pet gets excited about the festivities, which may be down to the special treatment they’re about to receive. Six in ten pets are set to receive their own stocking on the morning.
Scott Jefferson, marketing director from Pets at Home, said: “Buying festive treats for pets is now just a given at Christmas. There’s such a huge range out there – from the cute Christmas jumpers to exciting Advent Calendars and stuffed stockings – going shopping for gifts for pets can be great fun and all part of the enjoyment of being a pet owner.”
Out of the 1,000 pet owners surveyed by Pets at Home, 70% said they give special festive treats to their animal friends, chocolate, bones etc. Half (48%) create a special Christmas meal for their pet to enjoy, ensuring they don’t miss out on the big dinner.
Scott Jefferson continued: “Owners treat their pets like any other part of their family so it’s perfectly natural they are given a festive pet friendly dinner, included on the Christmas cards and more. Buying people gifts from their pet is a cute gesture which will put a smile on their face.”
