Sales of flea treatments up 100%
Feeling itchy? As the weather gets colder and the nights get darker, Pets at Home has seen a 100% increase in sales of household flea treatment’s over the last two weeks as homeowners crank up the
According to the petcare retailer, many owners believe fleas are most prominent in summer, when it is warm and humid. However, the reality is that fleas survive all year round if they are warm, therefore the minute the central heating is turned on at home, it is at risk of becoming a flea hot spot.
However, there are a range of easy-to-use, effective treatments available and of the 100% sales rise, some of the most popular treatments have included Staykill household flea spray (£15.00).This is a positive move according to Pets at Home, as it shows owners are taking the problem seriously by treating areas around the home and not just the pet.
Maeve Moorcroft MVB MRCVS, head of pets at Pets at Home, explained: “For every flea you see on your pet, there will be roughly 95 in your home at various stages of development, hidden in carpets, soft furnishings, pet bedding and even your own clothes. Rather worryingly, one flea can become 1,000 in just 20 days. Try to treat everything that your pet comes into contact with.
“Fleas aren’t always easy to see – they’re fast-moving, just 2mm long and dark brown so don’t just wait until you see your pet scratching or even when you get bitten, treat preventatively. Every four weeks for cats and six to eight weeks for dogs is ideal.”
Only 5% of a flea problem is on your pet. 95% of the flea problem exists in the pet’s environment – your home. Each female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, so an infestation can accumulate quickly if owners don’t routinely protect their pet. *
Fleas can cause serious health problems; for example DipylidiumCaninum, the most common type of
tapeworm, uses the flea for part of its lifecycle.
Maeve added: “If you’re concerned about fleas, I’d urge you to come into one of our stores and ask our flea and worm advisors for advice on prevention. Particularly useful for new pet owners, who may be nervous about using spot-on treatments for the first time.”
